The Sharing
Community begins its 25th year of service!
On a cold February 7th in
1983, the Sharing Community was formed when three courageous and visionary
leaders challenged the Yonkers Community to care for its own. Since that
time we have been in the forefront of the battles against homelessness,
hunger, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS. Several events are planned to mark
this milestone. More information to follow.

in the parish house of Holy Cross Church on Locust Hill
Avenue.
New Outreach Vehicle Received
A new custom made vehicle was delivered in May
to the Sharing Community that will double our capacity to provide HIV
counseling and testing.
Funding for the purchase was provided by the New York State
Dept. of Health, AIDS Institute through our M.S.A. (Multiple Services
Agency) contract.
Good news for
seniors and charitable organizations!
Under the Pension
Protection Act of 2006, a senior over the age of 70 making a gift to a
charitable organization from his/her IRA doesn't have to report the amount
as taxable income. Previously, which the amount could be deducted as a
charitable, the withdrawal still counted as taxable income. This meant that
some donors ended up giving both to the charity and the IRS. A new
provision changes that, as long as the donor and the donation meet the
following requirements:
-
donor must be at least 70 years of age;
-
the contribution is an outright gift;
-
there is a $100,000 limit on the transfer;
-
the gift must be transferred directly from whoever
manages the IRA;
-
only IRA's apply -- this provision does not apply to
401(k)'s or other retirement accounts.
As always, please verify
your specific tax consequences with your accountant or tax advisor. To make
a gift to The Sharing Community, Inc., please contact Mr. Joel Charles,
Director of Finance & Administration, or the Executive Director, at
914/963.2626.
