Last year at The Sharing Community
Last year, more than 500 different single homeless individuals found shelter
or housing with supportive services; including nutritious meals, medical
care, mental health and/or substance abuse counseling, as well as case
management services.
More than 130,000 nutritious meals—over 11,000 each month-- were
prepared and served to soup kitchen guests, shelter guests, and residents of
our various housing facilities. Due to the economic recession, our Soup
Kitchen numbers in 2009 and 2010 are significantly higher than in prior
years. More than 900 vouchers for nutritious food were given to 117
different households in our Medical Case Management and Nutritional
Education Program.
More than seven hundred different unsheltered homeless individuals were
engaged by our HOST workers on the streets of southwest Yonkers or at our
Hudson Street site. Our workers provided shelter referrals, domestic
violence interventions, detox and medical referrals, food pantry and food
stamp assistance, and entitlements advocacy.
Our street and community outreach programs made more than 7,000 contacts to
at-risk individuals in our community, distributing HIV prevention packets,
referrals to hospitals, shelters or detox programs,
or HIV testing.
It has been more than 10,000 days (and counting) since The Sharing Community
first opened our doors to help those in need in 1983. Every one of those
days built on the combined efforts of staff, volunteers, supporters, and the
community as a whole.
